RISING OUT OF THE SEA, PERCHED ON A GIANT SCALLOP SHELL, WAS THE MERQUEEN IN ALL HER GLORY, GLITTERING HEAD TO TAIL IN JEWELS.

“Madame Merqueen,” Adelaide started.

“Who?”

“Ms. Merqueen?”

“What?”

“Your Royal Highness?”

“That’s more like it.”

“Your Royal Highness, I understand that I’ve upset you by clipping your rose. But Max did put it back, and you’re still angry. I’m so truly sorry, but I didn’t know the rose belonged to you. If I had known it was yours, honestly, I never would have clipped it.”

“Hmm. You know, I do believe you,” the mer-queen said with a smirk. “But it’s too late. You’ve got what’s coming to you, my sweet. For better or for worse. Now you will just have to suffer the consequences, won’t you?”

“But she didn’t mean it!” Louis exclaimed.

“Enough! I don’t want to hear any more of this drivel!” Thunder clapped in the distance. “You know what I want,” she said, glaring at Adelaide and glancing ever so casually over her legs.

“No, I-I . . . ,” stammered Adelaide.

“Well, you’ll just have to figure it out then, won’t you?” With a giant swish of her tail, she flew up in the air and dove deep down into the blackening sea.

“Wait! Please!” Adelaide ran to the edge of the water, but there was nothing there. The merqueen had disappeared as suddenly as she had come.

Down the beach, Poppa called out to them holding up a bluefish and smiling. He hadn’t seen a thing.

“Told you, my dears, tunnel vision,” said McFadden, looking at Poppa. “Now, lass, I want you to go home and get prepared,” he said as he whirled up above. “I’m going to do the same. Good luck to you!”

Adelaide and Louis ran down the beach and got to Poppa just as the rain started pelting down.

“We’re off,” Poppa said, gathering up their gear as quickly as he could.

For the whole drive home, Adelaide looked intently out the back window, watching.
